CAT Exam

Common Admission Test (CAT) is a national-level management entrance examination conducted by one of the Indian Institutes of Management (IIM). CAT scores are used for admission to various top B-schools across the country. The CAT exam is an important pre-requisite for admission into more than 100 management institutes across India Every year among 4 lakhs students appear in the exam across the different centers of the country. Common Admission Test (CAT) is a computer based selection test. This exam is conducted every year by IIM's on rotational basis. CAT Exam Dates are generally declared in the month of August every year.

  • Eligibility
    Here are the eligibility details for CAT:
    • The candidate must possess a Bachelor's Degree with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA (45% for SC, ST and PWD/DA category).
    • Percentage obtained in Bachelor's Degree would be calculated on the basis of practice followed by the concerned university/institution. In case of grades/CGPA, the conversion would be based on the process defined by the concerned university/ institution.
    • Candidates appearing for the final year of Bachelor's Degree/Equivalent Qualification are also eligible to apply for CAT.

  • CAT exam pattern consists of the following sections:

    Quantitative Aptitude (QA) 34 60 minutes
    Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR) 32 60 minutes

    "Some questions in each section may not be of multiple choice type. Instead, direct answers are to be typed on the screen.
    Candidates will be allotted 60 minutes to answer questions in each section. Moreover, one cannot switch from one section to another while answering questions in a section

    Each IIM shortlisted candidates for second stage of selection which may be independent for each other. The process may include Written Ability Test (WAT), Group Discussions (GD) and Personal Interviews (PI). Performance in CAT examination is an important component in the admission process. IIMs do use previous academic performance of the candidates, relevant work experience and other similar inputs in short listing and ranking of candidates at various stages of the admission process.
