    The eligibility for this Test is at least 55% marks (for General & OBC Candidates) or 50% (in case of SC/ST candidates) in Master's Degree OR equivalent examination from universities/institutions recognized by UGC. For Persons with disability (PWD) category the eligibility is also 50% marks in Master's degree or equivalent examinations.

    Candidates who have passed out or the candidates who are in the last semester or final year of Master's degree and whose result is awaited may also apply for the Test. The condition is that such candidates must complete their P.G. degree examination within two years from the date of NET result with required criteria. Provisional admission will be given and candidate shall be considered eligible for award of JRF/Lectureship eligibility after they have passed their Master's degree examination or equivalent with at least 55% marks (50% marks in case of SC/ST/PWD). Candidates are advised to appear in the subject of their post-graduation & related subject only. For example a candidate having Master Degree in History may apply for NET Exams in either History or in Philosophy as per the choice.

    It is mandatory for the candidates who come under SC/OBC/ST have to submit attested copy of the category Certificate. In case of any ineligibility being detected by the Commission, their admission will be canceled and they will be liable for legal action.

    Age Limit: There is no upper age limit for appearing in NET exams while for applying JRF the upper age is 28 years for male & 32 years for the female candidate.
    UGC conducts NET twice a year, i.e., in the months of June and December. The notifications announcing the June and December examinations are published in the months of March and September respectively in the Employment News.
    The Test is held on last Sunday of June and December every year.
    Paper-1-It consists of 60 objective type questions of Mathematics, Reasoning, Indian Polity, People & Environment, Higher Education, Communication, Teaching Aptitude, Research Methodology and general awareness. Each question is of two marks each and candidate will have to give answers of only 50 questions out of 60. In case, candidate attempt more than fifty questions then the first fifty questions attempted by the candidate would be considered.
    1st Paper is Compulsory & qualifying in nature only .In this paper only 40% (which will be 40 Marks) is the qualifying total failing which Paper 2 & 3 shall not be evaluated. Since Paper 1 is only qualifying in nature hence any score below or above 40 % (equals 40 Marks or above) shall not be added in the aggregate of Paper 2 & 3.

    Paper-II shall consist of 50 objective questions related to the optional subject selected by the candidate. Each question is of 2 marks. All questions of this paper are compulsory.

    Paper-III-It consist of 75 questions related to the subject selected by the candidate. Each question is of 2 marks. All questions of this paper are compulsory.

    The candidates have to mark answers on Optical Mark Reader (OMR) sheet. In the last week of May and November, UGC website ( or upload the instructions how to fill OMR sheet.

    > UGC-NET (currently CBSE) has their own cut off for Paper 2 & 3 to clear NET exams. Clearing NET means you are eligible to appear for interview against vacancy for the post of Assistant Professor in the respective or related subject in any college or university department recognized under UGC.
    > If you score much higher (more than the min cut off for NET ) in the same exam you may be awarded JRF (Junior Research Fellowship) which is a form of stipend given to the scholar consecutively or in break for 5 years as a central assistance to carry out higher education (M Phil & or PhD).

    * The candidates with Master's Degree in Geography (with specialization in Population Studies) or Mathematics/Statistics are also eligible to appear in the subject Population Studies (Code 15).

    **The candidates with Master's Degree in Humanities (including languages) and Social Sciences are eligible to appear in the subject Women Studies (Code 74).
